A finite element procedure for radio-frequency sheath-plasma interactions in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies

چکیده
A numerical code that solves self-consistent radio-frequency (RF) sheathplasma interactions in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies is developed based on a nonlinear finite element technique. The present code solves for plasma waves based on the cold plasma model subject to a sheath boundary condition. The finite element procedure has been implemented for oneand two-dimensional analyses using simplified models for the poloidal plane of a tokamak. The results show good accuracy and generalize previous analytical calculations. The present approach shows promise for developing a code to predict RF sheath potentials in the scrape-off layer of RF-heated fusion experiments.

Numerical Analysis of Radio-Frequency Sheath-Plasma Interactions in the Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies
Electromagnetic plasma waves in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) are routinely used in magnetic fusion experiments to heat plasmas and drive currents. However, many experiments have revealed that wave energy losses in the plasma edge and at the wall are significant, and detected that the acceleration of ions into the walls due to the formation of radio-frequency (RF) sheaths is one...
متن کاملPfc/ja-83-40 Coupling Theory for Icrf Heating of Large Tokamaks
An analytical and numerical study for the coupling of a current sheet antenna to a tokamak plasma is presented. The antenna is of finite poloidal and toroidal dimensions and screened from the plasma by a sheath of anisotropic conductivity that shorts out just the toroidal component of the rf field. The excitation of only the fast component of the waves in the ion-cyclotron range of frequencies ...
متن کاملIon Cyclotron Range of Frequencies Mode Conversion Electron Heating in Deuterium-Hydrogen Plasmas in the Alcator C-Mod Tokamak
Localized direct electron heating by mode-converted ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) waves in D(H) tokamak plasmas has been clearly observed for the first time in Alcator C-Mod. Both onand off-axis (high field side) mode conversion electron heating (MCEH) have been observed. The MCEH profile was obtained from a break in slope analysis of electron temperature signals in the presence of ...
متن کاملObservation of wave-packet propagation in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies in a tokamak plasma
Experimental observation of wave-packet propagation in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies in a tokamak plasma is reported. Studies were carried out in the Caltech Research Tokamak [Phys. Fluids 23,614 ( 1980) ] in a pure hydrogen plasma and in a regime where fast-wave damping was sufficiently small to permit multiple toroidal transits of the wave packet. Waves were launched by exciting a sm...
متن کاملResonance cone interaction with a self-consistent radio-frequency sheath.
We study the propagation of lower-hybrid-type resonance cones in a tenuous magnetized plasma, and, in particular, their interaction with, and reflection from, the plasma sheath near a conducting wall. The sheath is modeled as a vacuum gap whose width is given by the Child-Langmuir law. The application of interest is when the resonance cones are launched (parasitically) by an ion-cyclotron radio...
